Here's the story of how a lil' heart got it's big start.

The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) debuted their Sweethearts Conversation Hearts in the 1800s. Originally called "motto hearts," their precursor was a trendy fortune cookie-like treat sold during the Civil War called a "cockle," which had printed phrases rolled up inside its scallop-shaped shell. Printing words directly on the candy was the bright idea of Daniel Chase, the brother of NECCO's founder. He also invented the machine that both pressed red vegetable coloring on the candy dough and cut the shapes. The new candies were a hit, especially wedding-day versions with sayings like: "Married in Pink, He will take to drink," and "Married in white, You have chosen right." At the turn of the last century, NECCO "Conversation Motto s" were even produced in shapes like watches, horseshoes, and baseballs.

Many of the original sayings, like "Be Good," "Be True," and "Kiss Me," are still printed, but NECCO began to update its lexicon in the late 90's with hearts that said "Call Me," "Fax Me," and "Email Me." Last year's new phrases were all food related, from "Recipe 4 Love," to "Top Chef." And while it used to be impossible to find the candy hearts during any other time of the year, in March of 2009 NECCO produced Twilight-themed candy hearts, with sayings like "I heart EC," "Lion and Lamb," "Bite Me," "Dazzle" and "Live 4 Ever."
While shopping for my conversation hearts I discovered two new additions to the family line of hearts.
The debut of hearts stamped with glam text. Along with images of a high heel, lips and a crown.
Of course these were my favorite.

NECCO manufactures eight billion Sweethearts per year and approximately 100,000 pounds of candy hearts are sold each day during the six-week period between January 1 and Valentine's Day.

No pain in Pain au Chocolat

There are two irresistible temptations that I just can't refuse.

Hot baked bread is the first and

to no surprise chocolate is the second.

But when you combine these two taste sensations together...... it's a taste bud explosion that calls my name.
Which I eagerly comply without hesitation.

Pain au Chocolat
(French pronunciation)
Chocolate Bread
(English translation)

I created a shortcut to achieving this chocolate delight.
So, here is my easy recipe that will be a delightful treat for anyone's special
Valentine.

What you'll need is a can (any size), labeled removed, washed/dried and generously greased.

Rhodes frozen Texas rolls.
One package of your favorite chocolate chips.

Here's the method:
Defrost rolls just until thawed, but not rising.
Layer dough balls in the bottom of the can alternating with a layer of chocolate chips, repeating until you've reached half way from the top. This will allow room for the dough to rise to the top without spilling over.
Cover and set aside to rise, then pop in the oven bake until golden brown.
The smell is intoxicating.

To enhance the flavor try a drizzle of Nutella over the chips or across the top when the bread is cool

Now it's time to decorate.

A print of french love letters made for a festive bread wrap. I made up a few styles of tags. This tag has the (dictionary) definition of love with a #14 Happy Valentines Day medallion.
Compliments of my friend Catherine at Sugar Baby .
Her shop is filled with beauty and charm...just like her.

I used a variegated red and cream colored cotton twine ( from my shop) it is much thicker than traditional bakers twine.
Which worked out ideally for this bread.

The second version is a vintage hang tag that completes this Valentine.

Gettin' hearts a pumpin' for Valentine's Day!

I do realize for many of us Christmas remnants are still floating around so.... the idea of Valentines Day is not on the horizon. But, my new years resolution is to focus on getting my ideas for gifts or DIY projects to you well in advance. Which in the past I've had many to share that were left to the last minute or more often not posted at all. With that thought....I wanted to share a particular after Christmas sale that will give a jump start to Valentines Day.

DARK CHOCOLATE MINT

Bath & Body Works is having a phenomenal after Christmas sale on their candles (in store and online). Although that may not be news to most. Have you given thought to them as a gift for Valentine's day? I for one am looking away from sugary sweets. I'm leaning towards alternatives for myself and those I know who have diet restrictions or have made a weight lost resolution.

One of the things I miss when trying to cut down on baking or indulging in sweets is......the aroma. There's nothing like the warm scent of something baking in the oven.

A gift of a sweet scented candle, body lotion or perfume could be a nice change.....
I would surely appreciate a guilt free indulgence right about now.

Christmas Past In The Present

It's time to deck the halls!
There are some advantages to living in the Pacific Northwest like....growing your own Christmas trees in the backyard.
At a glance the trees outside always appear smaller to me than they actually are.

So, harvesting at the perfect time is tricky.
Because they look small.....I always want to wait allowing them to mature.
Which inevitable means we'll be chopping down treezilla!

The Christmas magic begins with the nostalgic decorations.
We are fortunate to have inherited (my hubby) Paul's childhood ornaments.

They're so very precious to us.

So, to avoid the possible mishap when my sons cat is playing ping pong with the Christmas trimmings I will create a vignette where they're safely spotlighted.

Although these are from Paul's Christmas past, I grew up with the same style of ornaments on my tree.
They bring back a flood of cherished memories.
I remember how each one twinkled among the
(old fashioned) tinsel.
We had a color wheel that spun round projecting an array of reflected colors on the ornaments.
I loved sneaking into the living room, (at bedtime) with a cushy blanket and pillow in tow.
I'd lay on the floor in front of the Christmas tree watching the light show until I fell asleep.

I love A-L-L the shapes and colors of pink or teal, with touches of gold and silver glitter. I especially adore the little details in the written sentiment of holiday cheer.

I was searching for an affordable solution in giving a little something to those who live in various (distant) locations.
With the mailing cost it adds up quickly.
I'd like to show you what I've found to solve my dilemma.

Walgreens has several style options of (flat) glittered ornaments that easily tucked into my Christmas cards.
They were on sale at $1.49 for 12 so....I stocked up for next year and then some.

Before finding the deal at Walgreens...I'd purchased these majestic looking (gold glittered) reindeer at the Dollar Tree.
They were a little more expensive than Walgreens at $1. for a pair.
The reindeer went into this years cards with a few added embellishments and a hang tag that read...

MY THANKSGIVING IS GOING TO POT!

The table will be set.

Our star guest Mr. Tom will be sitting center stage waiting for his accompaniment.

For many years this was our traditional Thanksgiving side dish..."sweet potato casserole." Loaded with toasty, gooey marshmallows.

That is until......one year when inspiration and (marshmallow) boredom hit. That's when a new (side dish) star was born and my Thanksgiving went to pot.

"POT PIE" that is.

Here's the how-to's for my.....

Sweet Potato Apple Streusel Potpie.

SWEET POTATO FILLING

2-3 29 oz cans cut sweet potatoes or

the equivalent of baked sweet potatoes.

1-20 oz. can (no sugar added) apple pie filling
1/2 c. diced apple

Combine drained sweet potatoes, apple pie filling and diced apple.

Spoon half of the sweet potato filling into a baking dish.

Spread an even layer of the streusel topping over the filling.

Repeat with the remaining filling and topping.

Bake 350 degrees 25-35 mins

STREUSEL TOPPING:

3-4 tbsp. butter, semi firm
1/2 c. (give or take) flour or Bisquick

1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 c. coarsely chopped pecans

1/2 c.coconut (optional)

PUMPKIN SHAPED SHELL

and

FALL LEAVES

Using prepared pie crust

(Trader Joes has phenomenal frozen pie dough sheets).

Before rolling dough out, brush various autumnal colors of food coloring in random spots.

Leave some of the natural color as well.

Roll dough, then

with a maple leaf cutter stamp a variety of sizes.

For the veining gently score the leaf with a paring knife.

Using the back of a mini bundt or jumbo muffin pan coat it generously with oil. (I used a coconut spray oil , but any oil will do).

Cover the individual pan shapes with pie crust (I cut the crust that's going to be the top shorter)

Baste the shell with food coloring.

This is only necessary if you want the shell to resemble a pumpkin

Bake until golden brown.

Fill your baked pumpkin shells with the piping hot...

Sweet Potato Apple Streusel.

Top with a dollop of whipped cream.

Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without a few gifts of gratitude. Sweet pumpkin and acorns shared with family and friends.

The acorns and pumpkins are this years fun discovery that I'm ecstatic about making (showing major restraint in not inhaling every
one of them).

Angel laid on my chest and filled my face with kitty kisses. Trying to give me enough of them to ease my pain and hopefully carry me through in her absence. Our time is fleeting. How I wished I could turn back the clock.
When I look at her I can't convey to her the the love
I have, or how great this loss is to me.
Especially how I'll miss her everyday.

Angel always loved blogging, more so putting in her opinion.

She has been my constant companion through my darkest hours and has brought my greatest delights for 16 years.

Preparing for a Fiesta!

For many revelers, the Fifth of May has come to mean Margaritas and Mexican food, and spring weather. But Cinco de Mayo isn't the celebration of Mexican independence, as many believe, nor is it celebrated throughout Mexico. Festivities are generally confined to the state of Puebla, where, in 1862, Mexican troops defeated an invading French army nearly double their strength. Citizens there still mark the occasion with a military parade honoring the Battle of Puebla, followed by a fiesta filled with music, dancing, and, food.

In the U.S., though, Cinco de Mayo is rapidly becoming a favorite springtime celebration. Whether you blame it on the aggressive advertising of Mexican beer companies or credit Chicano pride and a growing interest in Mexican culture along with the cuisine..... the fact remains that May 5 is the perfect excuse to entertain.

Méxican Folklórico Dancers

A folk dance is performed in celebration of a special event. The dancers are wearing the region of jalisco dress. Every region represents their own rich cultural heritage through their interpretive dance and costume.

The dresses have an array of vibrant color's.

To become an accomplished dancer it takes years of vigorous training, so

children start practicing at a very young age.

Every female dancer will have (colorful) ribbons braided into her hair or wear a flower headpiece for her performance.

The accompaniment for the perfect fiesta...... is a
Mariachi band!

The food is an integral part of the celebration!

I focused on authentic meals that are as complex and rich as Mexican culture itself. My dishes are not commonly found in a Mexican restaurant, but would be found on every Latinos dinner table. Add drinks and a festive setting, and you've got the makings of a fabulous fiesta.

I found these little maracas and repurposed them into napkin rings.

The tissue flowers are a traditional Mexican decoration.

Main course ...chilaquiles

Made with corn tortillas, enchilada sauce, ground beef, spices and lots of cheese!

Garnish with sour cream and sliced avocado.

We like a little tomato and lettuce with our chilaquiles.

Fideo with frijols refritos

I refer to this dish as... Mexican spaghetti, the pasta is similar to angel hair that's been cut into tiny strands.

The fideo has a tomato sauce base with chicken broth, onions and comino (cumin).

Topped with refried beans, salsa, green onions, cilantro and sour cream.

It is typical to eat with tortillas... for scooping
(in place of a spoon or fork)

Dessert.....pan dulce

"Conchas" are a lightly sweet bread that has a sugar-shell pattern on top.

An "Empanada" is a turnover with a pumpkin , jam, or cream filling.

"Besos" consists of two round domes with a “kiss” of strawberry jam and coconut,
(my favorite!!)

No fiesta would be complete without a Piñata!

So I made you a mini version of a "sombrero."

Created from a swatch of chile pepper fabric and gathered crepe paper.

Here are the treasures you'll find inside when you crack it open.

Hot Tamales, chocolate gold coins and confetti.

Chocolate Lace

There are several ways of making Chocolate Lace, but the basic is by pipping either free hand or tracing lines over a template.

Moving gently with a sweeping motion in various directions
until a generous coating is formed.
**The chocolate chips or candy melts must have a thin runny consistency to form delicate lines**
Store molded lace in an air tight container.

Just before my final strokes, I drew a heart and topped it off with a few more fine drizzles.
Don't forget a dusting of (edible) glitter.

I used an iridescent pink..."love it!"

I'm having a special B-day dinner party for a sweet friend this weekend and since we're cutting back on our sugar intake

I thought I'd take opportunity to practice a revised Oreo recipe I concocted for lower carb bon-bons.

~ calling for only 3 ingredients~
1.Murray chocolate sandwich cookies
2. Mascarpone or low fat cream cheese
3. Sorbee sugar free chocolate bar

My guess is the test samples were a hit, being that Paul handed me back an empty plate.

without taking a few snapshots.

This was definitely the Christmas that kept on giving. While most were packing up decorations...we were still joyfully receiving holiday guests including my grand-pups. I'm always amazed at how those pups can wear us out!! Hubs and I look at pup sitting as the minor leagues training for the major leagues of grand parenting.

This years Christmas tree was cut from our backyard.

We have a few trees growing awaiting their turn to be "axed" and adorned for the holiday.

The only ~~major~~ issue...trees that grow outside appear ~~a whole heck of a lot~~ smaller in the great outdoors.

Needless to say.....being that it had turned into a tumbleweed it was more difficult removing "TREEZILLA!"

The branches had dried up a bit, trapping our Christmas lights in it's clutches!

I'm happy to report they were eventually freed.

I'll have to admit.....I may have over indulged a tad over the holiday, but I've got a sure fire way to get back on track.
Join me and I'll fill you in on my recipes for success.

It starts at my fridge with not just healthier choices, but

convenient ones. Cause, face it's easier to reach for a bag of chips or cookies....achieving instant gratification at lightening speed!

So, here it goes.....

I start the week off by dicing a large variety of veggies.

Storing them in a airtight container.

I separate the tomatoes and cucumbers (into their own container) because of their higher moisture content. This prevents that moisture from turning the other veggies soggy after the first day, (if they're stored together).

To save time I purchase the bagged chopped cabbage, along with Romain heart leaves.

When my tummy starts to grumble I can put my salad together in a snap!

I add fish, poultry or beef for my lunch/dinner.

Second Recipe....The POWER SHAKE

This also satisfies my chocolate milkshake craving.

It's a great breakfast especially for on-the-go.

In a blender combine the following ingredients.

1-2 heaping cups of ice (I prefer mine thick)
1-2 cups unsweetened chocolate soy milk
1 frozen banana
1 scoop vanilla Slimfast powder (yes vanilla)
1 scoop chocolate Slimfast powder
or any chocolate vitamin (protein opt.) powder.
Blend
This makes 2-4 servings.

This recipe is a great substitute from most
yogurt and or fruit smoothies, which can contain over 32g. of sugar.
Equaling the same amount of sugar as one can of soda pop.
(YIKES)

Yup, still looking for what can satisfy the "not so healthy choices."

I bought the brownies to try.

I have to say...they were delish.

The texture and flavor (in my opinion) were spot on.

Enjoying it with a cup of herb tea was perfect.

It kept me from reaching from the boxed brownie mix, which speaks volumes.

The day of "l'amour" is fast approaching.

I'd like to share a few ideas with you that I've used. Maybe they'll come in handy for a-l-l those confections you've
(so tirelessly) baked for your family and friends.

TINS

Little Drummer Boy Drum

These sugared cookies with the pretzel/marshmallow drum sticks are so cute in their tin drum case.
These tins are readily available at most stores.
The silver cording crisscross and ribbon creates the drum effect perfectly.
You can purchase Pecan Sandie's.....roll coat the edges with white chocolate and sanding sugar.

Chocolate Truffles

Here's a sweet vintage inspired tin with

a little silk seam binding.

An antique brooch would be a nice finishing touch.

Snowman

This Frosty character tin would be a festive way to house your Snowball Cookies.

Snowball Cookie Recipe

1 cup butter (2 sticks) softened

2 1/2 cups- flour

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 pinch of salt

Combine

Form balls, bake 325 10-12 mins.

Dust in powder sugar

VASES

White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzel Canes

For a charming rustic vase... repurpose a Pringles potato chip container by wrapping it in upholstery webbing or a strip of tartan plaid wool fabric.

Attach a rusty charm with a jute (twine) and raffia bow.

Embellish with a small swag of evergreens and dried berries.

It's simple and festive.

Shortbread Medallions

Colorful paper shreds nested in white pedestal bowls adds color and padded protection for those fragile baked goods

Completing the look with a combination of red and white bakers twine and ribbon.

Tags and or recipes add a nice personal

touch.

Meringue Christmas Tree Swirls

Glassware really creates a touch of elegance in any gift presentation.

Vases, urns, apothecary jars, can also be used to

serve your sweet treats.

Cornucopias...

in copious amounts.

During the Christmas holiday season we receive surprise visitors.

I like to have a selection of "Sweet Surprises" waiting for them.

I'll prepare various styles of cornucopias and fill them with a variety of candies and

set them out in baskets and trays for my guest to take home.

When I found this Waffle cone photo I wanted to add this design to my collection, but I couldn't find any instructions.

It seemed simple enough; so I gave it a try.

When I'm making copious amounts I'm always looking for shortcuts.

Pulling out the waffle maker

along with all the ingredients was the one big step I cut out.

I purchased my waffle cones from the local

grocery store.

Easypeasy!

Double dip the waffle cone rim in melted white chocolate with another quick double dip in sanding sugar crystals.

I filled the Cornucopias with traditional hard Christmas ribbon candies and wrapped them cello bags.

Foiled Doily Cornucopias

These are the directions for my traditional foiled cornucopias.

I also set these at each place setting on our Christmas dinner table.

Simply....

Roll a 10 inch foiled (paper) Doily into a cone, hot glue into place.

To form the handle dab another spot of hot glue on the tip end of either...wired tinsel garland or pipe cleaner and affix to each side of the cone.

I tie a few jingle bells on with metallic thread.

Fill with cookies, candies, toys, etc.

PAPER

This Country Living cookie envelope along with the single strip wrap concept (in the next photo) is one of my super easy favorites, especially adorned with the crystal snowflake ornament.

It can be applied to so many types of paper...

Glassine, scrapbook, tissue, etc.

Just by cutting a strip of decorative paper and wrapping the sleeve around the cookies.

Tie and tag,

Voila!

I hope one of these techniques will help in the last minute preparations, that always have a tendency to sneak up.

For some ~~in denial~~ reason I thought my youngest sons departure to college would be a breeze. I had planned to utilize the ~~so called~~ great wisdom I'd acquired after ~~barely~~ surviving his brothers send off to college years prior. Like a Hoover I was sucked into this fantasy just like the self induced amnesia I've embraced after the last (college) departure. Unfortunately the bucket of ice cold reality splashed upon my face in a... cold, wet, wave (forming unquenchable tears).

As you could tell since I've been MIA... it wasn't the "breeze" I'd thought it would be. Those suspicious noises you may have heard in the far off distance that were chalked up to wild animal noises were... just the echos of little old me wailing.
Time and several visits from my college student have helped the healing process.
I'm happy to report my creative mojo has slowly made it's way back.
During my absence I've continued to check in with you from time to time.
The holiday spirit has really sparked your creative juices.
I've discovered such grand Christmas ideas!

"A gift within a gift"

Taking my found inspiration..... I created ice skates that can be used as an ornament or gift topper.
Only a few stitches are needed to secure the pieces on these skates, making it easier to snip and use the socks whenever so desired.

Start with a pair of socks any pattern or size.

Stuff with Polyfill . Be careful not to over stuff, causing the sock to stretch out of shape.

Insert a sturdy gauged wire through the center of the Polyfilled sock from top to toe.

For a ruffled edge, run a gathering stitch just below the top of the sock.

Pull the gathers and tie with a secure bow.

Bend sock to form the skate then, stitch a crisscross pattern to form shoe laces.

Cut wire the length of your skate, leaving extra for
bending/ curling

I curled the blade, but you can leave a slight bend at the tips following the pattern of a traditional ice skate.

Trim ice skates with your favorite embellishments.

Watermelon..........

not only is it a cool, crisp, refreshing, taste treat it's packed with phytonutrients, vitamins A, C, and has a good hit of potassium, plus some B6 and thiamine.
Also a good source of Phosphorus, Zinc, Manganese, Magnesium and
it's great for a calorie, sodium free diet.

Many summer favorites can be created with watermelon: salsa, smoothies, sorbet and salad, to name just a few.

Every part of a watermelon is edible, even the seeds and rinds.

These lil' watermelons are simply made by hollowed out limes, watermelon Jello and
mini Nestle chocolate morsels for the seeds.

Melon Boats

Prepare Jello, add diced fruit, pour into small seedless watermelon or cantaloupe halves.
Refrigerate until set.

Slice and serve.

by any other name would smell as sweet."

We have over 150 rose bushes through out our garden.

All colors...ranging from peach to pink with every shade in between.

In a variety of shapes and sizes.

Heaven *scent*.

What do I do with all these lovely roses, you might ask?

For starters, I put several arrangements in the guest rooms for our family and friends.

Followed with centerpieces for both the dinning and kitchen tables.

We've collected several small vases that are filled with roses for the sweet little ladies who stroll on over from the retirement home.
We'll also donate a few to those in need of roses for weddings.

To no surprise...I like to reserve a few for creative projects.
Like this one from my archives.

I took that previous idea and combined it with another favorite technique from
Its-Time-To-Celebrate post.
I stamped French text onto the petals with food coloring.
It's important when stamping..... to use a *gentle touch*.
Taking a liner brush I coated the edges with white chocolate and...

added a sprinkling of Non-Pareils on some, (coarse clear) sanding sugar on others.

I now have the perfect Embellishment for any confection.

Along the same creative lines this next idea will impart an added sweet surprise to any...... tablescape or tuck a few into a note.
I used the same application, changing out the food coloring with ink for stamping my French text.
After allowing the petals to air dry, they were stored in a airtight container.
As a gift I've given a collection of French petals wrapped in a rose infused jar, that I've embellished,
which I could share the "how to" in a future post, if you'd like.

These dried petals are beautifully delicate.

Now, here's an easy Floral Caplet you can whip up for the lil' sweetheart in your life.
My friend Miss Shelia from Note Songs can make a petite version for Carter by replacing the metal or plastic headband with stretch lace or elastic and attaching the ends making a complete circle.

Step 1.
Pick out a 1 1/2- 2 inch width wired ribbon.
Measure the length of the headband (form) then double it.
Cut two strips of your ribbon to those specifications with an
extra 1/2 inch at both ends.
This will allow for the tuck and fold over for concealing the raw edges.

Step 2.

Hot glue or sew the two strip along the edge, creating a casing.
Smoothing the hot glue as you go, no lumps or clumps.
Don't panic if the hot glue squeezes out from the edges.
When the glue cools trim the excess with scissors .

Step3.

Fold over and glue the raw edges.
Slip the headband form into your ribbon casing.
**Important reminder: Seal both ends
by hot gluing the last inch or two to the headband form before sliding the end of the casing over the edge. **
This will prevent the casing from slipping off the headband form.

Step4.

Select and hot glue a charm to the center of your silk flower.

Step 5.
Flatten out the ribbon, glue your flower to the smooth area.
Once it's set It can be repositioned by sliding to sit center or off to the side.

They come from many avenues of inspiration. I've had several years of practice in the creative process, through teaching craft classes. The ideas flow freely, but to my dismay the set of instructions aren't always included when they come to mind. Sometimes it'll take a few (hundred) bloopers to get it right.
Thankfully I have you, my Blogettes to share them with when they do come to fruition.

(well, as much as it can be in the Pacific Northwest) SUMMER has landed primarily on the weekends, but we'll take any sunshine that's willing to make the trek from Florida,
cause face it Justine at....Stupid Is As Sister Does has it all.
She's has expressed how her (cute) face is melting in the Florida sun , so I think
she'd be more than happy to share.
While most were running their air conditioners this month,
we had been running our heaters!

There are many on line recipes for making candied citrus slices or peels.
Butter Yum
has the most beautifully illustrated detailed instructions.

I pour granulated sugar over the candied peels it keeps them crisp and
it leaves a sparkly coating.
You'll find yourself frequently reaching for these candied gems.
For topping your ice cream, cupcakes, drinks or for a treat to nibble on.

Candied Slices of...Orange, lemon and lime.

The simple syrup that's left behind from making your candied citrus can be used to sweeten any summer drink.

You know I couldn't leave you without a

*Sweet Surprise.*

How about Citrus Lollipop Swizzles?
While the tea is steeping we're going to get cookin.'

I used a lollipop recipe to create the citrus swizzles.
After the syrup reached the hard cracked stage, the zest from a whole lemon, lime and orange were added.
The zest replaces the need for any extract, the oils in the rind will provide a wonderful citrus flavor .
Bamboo skewers made perfect lolli sticks.
You'll see why in the finale.

*Important note*
I learned quickly...this is a slow and steady process,
a" low " boil will produce a clear candy.

If you let the candy syrup set for a few seconds the air bubbles will calm down.
I prefer the fizzy effect of the air bubbles, so I didn't wait to form my lollis.

I left the food coloring out so you could see the fine details of the zest.
Pretty sweet, don't you think?

Top off your Lollipops with fresh fruit
or...
bump it up a notch for your guest , add a little frill to the end of your lolli for a little dazzle.

I spun a sugary cage for my fresh raspberry sorbet.

We've come to a close from our very busy bed & breakfast style of entertaining that began in May.
It was wonderful having family and friends take time from their busy lives to visit a spell with us.
I decided to re-post this, because there were so many of you who missed the first publishing who wanted the instructions.

Let's get crackin' !
Part Two...Party Favor

We'll be using those toilet or paper towel rolls that you've been collecting.
Cut the paper towel rolls in half, matching the length of the toilet rolls.
You'll need three or four strips of (2 1/2-3 inch wide) patriotic themed (wired) ribbon or scrap booking paper.
Starting at the bottom, glue ribbon around roll leaving a smidge of over lap to cover raw edge.

Tuck edge in.

Wrap and hot glue second strip, tucking in raw edges.

Glue last strip leaving a large overlap.

Tie a bundle of tinsel trim together.
For a spiral effect I wrapped the wire tinsel around a pencil.

Slip tinsel bundle into the firecracker opening, tie securely with (patriotic themed) ribbon or bakers twine.

Here comes the fun part....turn the bottom over and fill with goodies,

candies, confetti, poppers, etc.

To close the bottom opening glue a strip of fabric then trim off the excess.
The weight of the contents will allow the firecrackers to stand on there own.

Time to embellish....well this would have been the part where I would have showed you the (various) vintage postcard (clipart) printed and glued to the front of my firecrackers....but my printer decided to conked out on me and when you're entertaining the masses there's isn't much time left for hunting down a new printer, so you'll have to imagine this part.
So... here's the fan that goes with the vintage postcard.

1. Cut the pleats from a cupcake liner.
2. Sew a gathering stitch along the top of the pleat.
3. Draw thread in until a round fan is formed, tie knot and glue closed.

I sprayed painted wood stars and used them as bases for my firecrackers.

Lets get crackin'!
Part one...Dessert

Insert a Pirouline (wafer cookie) into the center of a (mini) cake donette.

Melt Nestle white chocolate chips.
Immerse the donette into the white chocolate.
Sprinkle with (red, white, or blue) sanding sugar.
Set aside until the white chocolate becomes firm.

I purchased (mini) star shaped cookies, but homemade shortbread stars would work just as well. Dip toothpick into melted chocolate, adhere to the (back side) of the cookie.

Brush white chocolate (in sections) over Pirouline (wafer cookie) , sprinkle (liberally) with red, white, and blue sprinkles.

Step five
Wilton party picks can be used alone to form the shooting sparks,
or can be combined with the following...
Cut a (single) Twizzler or red licorice in half.

Cut each half three quarters of the length, leaving the end uncut Taper the bottom corners.

Insert the pick through the fringed Twizzler or licorice

Cookie pick gets placed in front and sparks pick sets behind .

Fruit leather or any flat strips of gummy candy can used in this step too. If you can't find the Wilton party picks. The star cookie with toothpick can be substituted in this step.

Carefully insert picks through the top of your firecracker.
Place on a star (or round) sugar cookie.

Here's the gate that connects our (back) yards together
and
the path that leads me to their (back) door.

This sign greets me at each visit as I enter their yard.
We have traveled this path back and forth through many seasons of our lives.
Come rain, snow or sunshine.

(that's my back yard in the background)

a delectable loaf of tastiness for my back door friends.

Along with party napkins, I have a plethora of cellophane bags too.
They come in handy for packaging an assortment of gifts.
I thought you'd might like to see how I spruce them up.
I start with.....
coffee filters, they're ideal for packaging baked goods,
they're absorbent with a charming ruffly touch .
The tan filters matched my kitchen themed tissue paper.

I've got all three designs of Goose Berry Patch tissue: Christmas, Garden and Kitchen prints,
(my all time favorites).
To my disappointment the tissue and matching bags have been discontinued from the GBP line, if anyone has any connections...
I would love it if they'd bring it back.

I cut a strip long enough to wrap from top to bottom.
Covering only the front and back, leaving the sides exposed, for a tiny hint at the surprise inside.

To dye the tags, dip or spritz with brewed tea.
Sprinkle cinnamon over damp tags , let dry.
Once again, the impatient one that I am...they went into the oven for a quick dry.
When they completely dried, I sprinkled a few drops of extract.
Some of my tags were scented with vanilla extract the others with cinnamon.
I change the extract to match the flavor of the confection inside.
Lemon, orange, coconut and almond extracts are the scents I use the most.
(I always use extracts and tea dyes for wrapping all food products)

Jot a note or recipe.

Tie with jute twine.

Reach into your collection of......Napkins, laces, ribbons or handkerchiefs, these are all simple elegant options.
Using fabric napkins or vintage hankies is giving a gift wrapped in a gift.

Dried or candied fruit slices can be used as charms with the tags.

Teas and candied fruit can be given during any season,
served up hot or cold.
I drop a few slices in the cello bag with the tea.
The candied lemon and orange slices are wonderful when they're infused with the tea.
Throughout the summer......sun tea is always brewing on my patio.

A swatch of lace, candied fruit and a little flower makes your cellophane bag into an elegant gift.

An easy and inexpensive way to personalize your ribbon is simple to achieve with rubber stamps.
You choose the caption, ribbon and color of ink, then stamp away.

I adore my vintage plates!
The delicate details of their raised divider.

If you look closely... these precious ball handles are reminiscent of my favorite snack,
sugar snap peas and every bit as sweet.

To my surprise these were the perfect size to serve as luncheon plates.

Potato medallion, strip steak, sauteed mushroom asparagus with a Parmesan cheese trumpet filled with a Boursin aioli.

Filo nests with lemon curd creme, fresh berries and candied lemon peel.

I added 3-4 tablespoons (to taste) of lemon curd to the recipe.

I can serve my main courses and desserts at the same time without any worries
of savory mixing with sweet.

Julienne carrot

Italian seasoned julienne sundried tomato
Italian cheese (grated)
Good Seasons Italian (all natural) Salad Dressing
( one packet prepared)
Romaine hearts

Dark chocolate mousse topped with mandarin orange marmalade.

Pot Du Creme
I combined semi chocolate with the milk chocolate chips.

Gently blend mandarin orange segments with orange marmalade.

Filo nests

Cut one single sheet of filo in half.
This is where neatness doesn't count, lay the pastry loose and crinkled in a (non stick) muffin tin
(preferably the larger cups).
The more wrinkles the better the effect.
Bake at 325 just until a pale golden brown, approx.. 5 mins.

Cut single strips of filo.
Spread a wrinkled layer on cookie sheet.
Spritz pastry strips with a coat of spray cooking oil.
Bake the same as the nests.

Scatter a few of the loose strips into your nest and fill.
I freeze both the mousse and creme.
When frozen it actually takes on a gelato consistency.
Plating it while it's frozen keeps it chilled throughout dinner.

Both nests and fillings can be prepared well in advance.

I've received many request for suggestions on your upcoming special occasions Mother's Day, weddings and showers. That is why I choose this particular theme, because these nests can be applied to each of these events.

Pearls Of Wisdom

This idea came to me while I was playing in my jewelry box and came across a strand of pink pearls.
As mother's we're always giving advice to our children.
Suggestions that may have been given to us by our own mothers.
Our hope is... those "pearls of wisdom' we gift our posterity will be handed down through the line to future generations.

In advance...have each guest send you their pearls of wisdom, especially those that include humor.
Print or write them on (decorative) paper.
**Don't forget to include the tittle
"Pearls Of Wisdom" on each note**

Tint and Roll small balls of fondant to form pearls.

After they've partially dried and are firm to the touch, drill a hole with a toothpick through each pearl .
(I'm not patient... I put the pearls in the oven at 200 degrees for about 3-4 mins).
Set aside to cool.
Brush with Lustre pearl dust.
String the pearls with a narrow ribbon, bakers twine, or crochet thread.
Gather both ends and tie a knot.
Tie the rolled note onto a larger decorative bow.
Gently place your pearls of wisdom. on your dessert.

As your guest are seated and ready to enjoy their desserts, have them read some or all of the notes aloud .
Gather the pearls of wisdom together and place them in a keepsake box as a gift for your guest of honor.

I've also had several inquires about the Glad Press'n Seal.
To clarify...it's a plastic wrap not a sealing machine.
I know the name can send a mix message.
I purchase the large rolls from Costco, but you can find it in any store on the same shelf as the (Saran) cling wrap and tin foil.

"Eggspecially" For You

Chocolate Easter eggs are essential in my Easter Baskets.......

but, I find them on their own a tad lack luster.

I reached for my Wilton stash of Daises, , Spring Nonpareils and
pastel Candy Pearls, which are
very similar to dragees.

It just takes a dab of white chocolate applied with a toothpick to stick the Pearl to the Daisie

I wanted a to create a cozy nest for my eggs.
It was a challenge since I wanted it to be edible...of course.
There's nothing softer and sweeter than Cotton Candy.

For Easter gifts I nestled them in dot and striped egg cups.

This dotted egg was covered in the candy Pearls using milk chocolate in place of the white to adhere the candy Pearls.

To form the nonpareils cluster centers, I placed a few Daisie in a little dish and added the white chocolate just as I did for the Pearls. Then I sprinkled the nonpareils over the Daises until they were completely covered. After a few minutes they're dry and ready to apply to your eggs.

I brushed a generous coat of white chocolate and nonpareils in sections.
Despite the best efforts there were a few gaps that I touched up with a toothpick and another dab of white chocolate with a dusting of sprinkles.

On my last trip to Seattle my Daughter in-love took me to an amazing bakery supply shop.

It was literally jammed packed with every baking accessory imaginable in every nook and cranny, somewhat reminiscent of hunting through Grandmas attic.
In my search I discovered an edible glitter.
Yup, what more could I ask for than some added bling to my culinary confections.

Whether you call it Neapolitan or....

It's YUMMMMMY!!

Mmmm, looks good enough to eat.

This Neapolitan exfoliating scrub is made with creamy shealoe butter, yummy scented fragrance oils, and super fine dendritic salt, sea salt or sugar. You can make this scrub in one solid color, or layer multiple colors for super cuteness! This recipe could be varied easily to create all kinds of delicious ice cream parlor inspired creations, like Orange Cream, Banana Split, or Mint Chocolate. Switch out the fragrance and the food color to create your own unique Ice Cream Scrub.

Neapolitan ice cream scrub

Ingredients (click links)
6 ounces Shealoe Butter (soapersupplies.com)
1 1/2 cups Dendritic Salt (substitute with ultra fine sea salt or sugar)
1/2 teaspoon Milk Chocolate Fragrance Oil
1/2 teaspoon Strawberry Fragrance Oil
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Non-Browning Fragrance Oil
food coloring- Brown & Red

Directions
In a large mixing bowl combine the shealoe butter and salt or sugar. Shealoe is naturally soft, so you should be able to mix this without heating the butter. However, if it is necessary, you can heat the butter gently by warming the container in hot water. (Be careful not to let the water get inside the container though.) After the butter and Salt or sugar are fully mixed, split the mixture into three parts in three separate mixing bowls. Add one Fragrance Oil to each bowl, thoroughly mixing each into the mixture. Next, slowly add the brown food coloring to the milk chocolate scented batch of salt/sugar, combined small amounts of food coloring until it resemble milk chocolate ice cream. Repeat with the red food coloring adding it to the Strawberry scented batch of salt or sugar next. Leave the Vanilla scented batch uncolored. Once the batches are fully mixed they are ready to be scooped or spooned into containers .

This fine grained scrub makes a great body polish, but should not be used on the face. The Neapolitan ice cream scrub looks adorable packaged in a sundae parfait glass. Like most handmade skin care products, this scrub should be used up quickly, as it has not been formulated for long term storage.

A paper couture ensemble could be the way to go.
Starting with a frock,

You can never go wrong with the basic black and white.

These definitely have a slash of pizazz.

Shoes are a must.
Heels or......

a wedge is the question.

What goes best with a paper couture dress and shoes?

A paper necklace of course.
Balls or......

beads, would be the perfect finishing touch.

A Foodie Friday anniversary wouldn't be complete without a little foodie fun.

In keeping with the paper tradition, I found this box of Vera Bradley Stationary the inspiration for my edible stationary.

First I needed paper, which came in the form of Fillo sheets.

A few squares were cut with a pizza cutter and some were cut with pinking scissors.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find my variety pack of fancy edged scissors.
Ideally they would've been my first choice.

The Wilton Food Writers are great for small rubber stamps.

Make up sponges and (gel) food coloring covered more surface area.

The Fillo needs to be covered (at all times) with a damp towel to prevent from drying out.

Usually each sheet is brushed with melted butter, but I just sprayed a little vegetable oil before baking.

The baking time was a short 4 minutes at 325 degrees.
I left a few edges curled to produce an old scroll effect.
The tea dye color after baking reminded me of a vintage parchment.
I would like to try this with my French script stamps...a Parisian postcard of sorts.

Now that the stationary is complete with a special message,
it's time to create a dessert to
embellish.

Has Valentine's Day got you in a quandary ?

Express your love with Conversation Heart petit fours.

Roll, cut and stamp.

I've put together labeled boxes where I store my brushes, rubber stamps along with other supplies that are used solely for foodie fun.
The last thing you want is to see your (foodie) stamps and brushes filled with dried up paint or ink.

Brush Pearl Dust across each word.

My Conversation Heart petit fours measured around two inches.
I must confess..... I did sample a couple, they were just too irresistible!

As for the wrapping......I'm going enlarge an image of the conversation heart box, then print it on card stock and
glue the print to the lid of the gift box.
If I'm feeling ambitious, I may cut the center of the heart to create a window.
I'm using mini cupcake liners for the petit fours,
but still deciding about packing them in the box with pastel tissue or with my latest addiction...crimped paper shreds.
Trimmed with either a pastel or Valentine themed ribbon.

Is there something that you've held onto over the years that's precious to you?

Something that would be puzzling to anyone else who gazes at it, as to why?

For our honeymoon we toured the pacific coast . Each day we stayed at a different coastal town. At one of our stops we took a long awaited walk on the beach. Where I discovered for the first time, Sea Glass. The sun was quickly setting, and I gathered as many of these precious gems as I could. Only catching a few from the wet sand before the sun would set. I put them in my pocket for safe keeping.

When we arrived to our new home, I carefully put my Sea Glass Jewels along with the few shells that I had collected into a simple bottle with water. I have carried it to each home we've moved into. Where it sits, positioned just right, capturing the light from the morning sun reflecting a rainbow of colors. My wonderful keepsake always takes me back to that romantic stroll on the beach. As a "young" newlywed couple walked, shared and planned they're life together. That was 27 years ago, but feels like yesterday every time my eye catches a glance of my little bottle of sea glass.

Here are my priceless jewels.
May not be worth much to many, but priceless to me.

I think that's when I first developed a passion for collecting all types of crystal/glass.
Antique, modern, stemmed, monogrammed, you name I love it!
Do you see Lidy's french glasses peeking from the back row?
You'll see more of them come spring and summer.

Needless to say... when I have the option of sending a glass bottle to the recycling center for the melt down it revs my creative energy into high gear, starting with these unique bottles.

Look at the ornate hardware.

I found Christian Lacroix evian water bottles at Big Lots.
The raised white lace details are beautiful.
Thanks to The Queen of Style Gollum who clued us in on the amazing finds that Big lots carries.
I was able to find the bottles for a dollar compared to the fourteen on Ebay!
The flutes pictured above were another incredible find at the Lots.

I pulled out my stash and went to work.

I found a variety of mini picture frames, this one was just over a dollar from Michaels.
It had a Valentine feel with just the right amount of sparkle .
There was a slight dilemma... it was connected to a key chain.
Something that a pair of handy wire cutters shortly remedy.
I hung a few charms on a chain creating a necklace for my lacy bottle.

The pouring spout was a find at the Dollar Tree, two to a pack. Fifty cents a piece, now that's a deal!
Once I got started..... many designs evolved.
One was made with a mini chalkboard and black chain from Home Depot, at 69 cents a foot it was more affordable than jewelry chain.
The links were a little larger on the HD chain, so it was easier attaching the jump rings and charms.
I also repurposed a rosary that added a vintage look.
Once you get started you'll be looking for all sizes and styles of bottles, the smaller are ideal for liquid soaps or vinaigrette's.
I was a little concerned the frame might bang against the bottle when it was handled so,
I secured the back of the frame to the glass with a Velcro dot.

My battery conked out, so I couldn't get a good shot of my completed bottles.
I hope you can get the the idea from these fuzzy pics.

I can swap the tag out to match my elixir de jour.

SNOW BALL.....

Ornaments?

I've been making (and selling) faux snowballs and snowblocks for a few years.
It all started when I had an idea for a project that included a galvanized pail that I had painted.
I wanted to fill it with snowballs and under-lighting.
Well, it has "snowballed" from there.
These are what I decked my Christmas tree with this year.
I wanted to show you my frosty ornaments before they head back into storage.

The Angel in my life

She is my pleasant distraction.

I've got a sneaking suspicion it's time for my medicine.

It is?!!

P-L-E-A-S-E! NOT the yucky stuff!!

Wait a minute, whats this?

I must give this the sniff test.

This is too good to be medicine.
It tastes like my yummy favorite...YOGURT.

And we have success.

Mini Chocolate Dipped Apples

These appetizers are the perfect bite size indulgence.
I chose a peppermint candy topping, but
toffee bits, nuts, or (finely chopped) candied fruits are also a nice compliment to these little apples.
I found they need to be made up the day of the party for optimum freshness.

The mini apple form is cut out with a melon baller.
I prefer to use Ever Fresh to preserve the apples, in place of lemon water.
Whichever you use... give them a good pat dry before their dive into the chocolate bath.

To attach the candy cane drill a hole three quarters of the way down with the cane tip.
Dip the cane (end) into the chocolate, then back into the hole the chocolate will bind them together. I did a quick set in the freezer (I'm too impatient to wait for the apples to set in fridge).
When the canes are set it's time for the second (or double) dip for the entire apple.
Sprinkle the topping pieces of choice around the top or bottom of the apple.
Cool set (again).

Serve in a festive mini cup cake liner or cup....
(a Pâtisserie liner or Bon Gâteauun Cadeau Doux cup).

I added a generous layer of sugar crystals to the serving platter to represent snow then placed the chocolate apples in the cups/liners on the platter of faux snow.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to snap a shot before they were snatched up.
These french script petite liners and cups are sold out, but will be back in my shop soon.

Pot Du Creme

I have to say this was the most fun I've had creating a new recipe for my petite pots.
It entailed tasting vast amounts of chocolate and cream... I did share the honor of taste testing with Paul.
Here's the base recipe for Sara's Pot Du Creme

1 cup- milk chocolate: bar, chunks or chips (no imitation)
1/4 cup- heavy whipping cream
Combine Ingredients
on the stove top at low heat then stir together chocolate and cream just until smooth.
( Keeping the melted chocolate at a cooler temp will allow you to add the whipped cream without deflating).

In A Separate Bowl
whip up 1 cup of heavy whipping cream.

Fold Together
by heaping spoonfuls the whipped cream to your melted chocolate.

Pipe or spoon into your Pots.
Chill Set
a minimum of 60 mins
This can be made well in advance.

Flavored Whip Cream
I place a demitasse or jigger of the whipped cream next to each Pot Du Chocolate Creme.
The whipped cream is prepared with bourbon vanilla and powder sugar to taste.

A variation to this recipe is...
1/2 cup Semi or dark chocolate
1/2 cup milk chocolate
Also...
adding instant or brewed espresso to the chocolate base and or to the whipped cream will enhance the chocolate flavor.
This can also be adapted for a low carb recipe by substituting the chocolate with a sugar free chocolate bar(measuring 1 cup).

This is wonderful tip for any seasonal beverage.

I would like to add a special note of appreciation to thank you for showing your concerns for my absence and the well wishes for my kitty girl, Angel. Her vet thinks the chronic limp in her left leg is due to arthritis. Her lab results were favorable, but when the doctor was shaving her leg to draw her blood she discovered an abnormal sore. By it's appearance it has the signs of melanoma. We're still not sure at this point, but we have a close eye on it for any sudden changes. She's been in my life for 14 years and has been my comfort through a multitude of life's events, including my own daily health struggles. So, my concentration has been a little distracted with her.
This is a start of a new year with renewed hope for the future. " I look forward to playing with my new camera and upgraded laptop, (which both had taken a noise dive). I hope to continue to share Sweet Surprise's with you!!"
